Ishrat Jahan case:
Ishrat Jahan case: Have evidence against Intelligence Bureau officer, says CBI
 INDIA , 13-June-2013  6:0:45 AM
Countering the claim made by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) that one of its officers has been wrongly implicated in the Ishrat Jahan case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today said they have the evidence to prove it.

Sources in the CBI have said that the investigating agency has witness testimony and call data records to prove that Rajendra Kumar, the IB official, was part of the conspiracy to eliminate Ishrat. Sources said the IB did not cooperate with the CBI so the agency did its own investigation.

"We have evidence that will stand legal scrutiny," CBI Director Ranjit Sinha told NDTV today

Mr Kumar, a 1979-batch IPS officer from Madhya Pradesh cadre, was questioned by the CBI earlier but sources say the agency has served fresh notice to him as previous examination of the officer was not satisfactory and replies given by him appeared diversionary.

Sources claimed that Mr Kumar reportedly provided the weapon, an AK-47 rifle, which was used to kill Ishrat in 2004 and that is why they want to question him.

A decision about his custodial interrogation will be taken only after the fresh round of questioning, sources said. They said his statement would be crucial in finalising the chargesheet in the case.

The agency has also intensified efforts to nab Additional DGP of Gujarat P P Pandey who has allegedly gone absconding even as warrants have been issued by special CBI court against him.

The 1980-batch IPS officer from Gujarat cadre was the Joint Commissioner of Police in Ahmedabad in 2004 when Ishrat was killed.

The CBI on the instruction of the Gujarat High Court took over the probe of the fake encounter in which 19-year-old Ishrat, Javed Sheikh alias Pranesh Pillai, Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar were killed in Ahmedabad on June 15, 2004 allegedly by a Crime Branch team led by DIG DG Vanzara
