| Not long after he flagged off a convoy of trucks carrying relief material for Uttarakhand this morning, Congress number 2 Rahul Gandhi landed in the hill state where over 15,000 people are still stranded after massive floods ravaged it last week.
Mr Gandhi was abroad when the floods hit Uttarakhand and today's flag-off at the Congress headquarters was his first public appearance since then. A fact that the rival BJP has highlighted, with spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi saying on Saturday, "Rahul Gandhi is needed and he is in a foreign country..."
Ms Lekhi was countering the Congress for slamming the BJP's Narendra Modi after media reports said that the Gujarat Chief Minister visited Uttarakhand on the weekend with a team of officials and flew out the next day having ensured the evacuation of 15,000 people from his state.
The Congress said Mr Modi's "Rambo act" reflected "the rank opportunism and the sheer desperation to try and politicise and even milk tragedy for political gains." Mr Modi's opponents have also criticised him for singling out Gujaratis for help.
But Mr Modi's parachute act seems to have triggered more than just a war of words. On stage as Mrs Gandhi and Rahul flagged off 24 trucks today were many senior ministers including P Chidambaram and Ambika Soni.
The party's Oscar Fernandes was at pains to explain how the public appearance of the Congress' top leaders was different from Mr Modi's. The presence of Mrs Gandhi and Rahul, he said, was designed to enthuse party workers engaged in relief operations.
Mr Modi has aggravated the Congress, which governs Uttarakhand, further by tweeting that he has offered to rebuild the holy shrine of Kedarnath, destroyed by the flood.
Ambika Soni said Mr Modi was not the only Chief Minister to have visited Uttarakhand. The Congress' Prithivraj Chavan of Maharashtra and Ashok Gehlot of Rajasthan had visited too, she pointed out.
