Cyclone Phailin hits Odisha, communication lines snapped, no power at several places

Very severe" cyclonic storm Phailin made landfall near Gopalpur on Odisha coast on Saturday night with wind speed of around 200 kilometres per hour, causing very heavy rain in most parts of the state. Under the influence of the cyclone, many part of the state are witnessing heavy rainfall and strong winds

1.Cyclone Phailin has hit communication lines and power supply in Odisha, Revenue & Disaster Management Minister Surya Narayan Patra told NDTV. In capital Bhubaneswar, there was no power all of last night as the power supply was cut as a precautionary measure as strong winds have uprooted trees and electricity poles, Mr Patra added. As advised by the authorities, most people are inside their homes.(Full coverage)

2.The exact scale of the damage from the cyclone will be known in a few hours from now and the focus will shift to rescue and relief work.(Track updates)

3.After making landfall near Gopalpur and causing very heavy rain along the coast and in most parts of Odisha, Phailin moved north-northwestwards and is weakening gradually. Currently, the system is situated 200km inside Odisha near Sambalpur with wind speed of 80-90 km per hour. It has been downgraded to a "cyclonic storm" now.(Helpline numbers)

4.The cyclone has prompted the country's biggest evacuation in 23 years with more than eight lakh people moved up from the coastline in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh to safer places. While Odisha has reportedly evacuated over 7.2 lakh people, Andhra Pradesh has moved about a lakh to safety. A massive relief operation has been mounted by multiple state and central agencies.

5.As the cyclone hit Gopalpur yesterday, tidal waves rose to 3.5 metres. In Ganjam district, there were reports of wind speeds hitting upto 240 km per hour. The cyclone remained "very severe" for six hours after hitting the coast.
