2G scam: DMK chief Karunanidhi's wife testifies at her home today
 INDIA , 28-October-2013  5:34:22 AM
The home of DMK chief M Karunanidhi is serving as a court-room today with a magistrate ensconced there to record the testimony of the politician's second wife, Dayalu Ammal.

The 84-year-old has been listed as a witness by the CBI, which is investigating the telecom scam which has engulfed several top leaders of the DMK, including Mr Karunanidhi's daughter M Kanimozhi and former union minister A Raja, the alleged architect of the swindle.

Dayalu Ammal's lawyers had argued that she is unwell and cannot appear in court, so Chennai's Chief Metropolitan Magistrate recorded her statement at home.

Dayalu Ammal is part-owner, along with step-daughter Kanimozhi, of the Kailaignar or KTV channel in Chennai. The CBI says that the channel received kickbacks worth 214 crores for Mr Raja, who as Telecom Minister in 2008 gave out-of-turn licenses with free second-wave or 2G airwaves to ineligible companies.

At her deposition, Dayalu Ammal reportedly said she did not know "KTV, CBI or what is 2G."

Both Dayalu Ammal and Kanimozhi have said that they played no role in the management of the channel. Kanimozhi was released on bail in November 2011 after spending more than six months in jail. (2G case: Kanimozhi

The national auditor has said that the telecom scam cost the country upto 1.76 lakh crores.

The DMK quit the Prime Minister's coalition government in March 2013, accusing India of failing to hold Sri Lanka accountable for alleged war crimes by its defence forces against the country's Tamils in the final months of the island's civil war.
