Mumbai's Campa Cola compound reside
Mumbai's Campa Cola compound residents fight eviction, lock up gates
 INDIA , 12-November-2013  2:33:8 AM
Over 100 families in Mumbai's "Campa Cola" compound locked up their gates on Tuesday and physically blocked out dozens of civic and police officials as they desperately fought to keep their home of two decades.

Asked to vacate their illegal flats in the high-rise complex in south Mumbai, the families have refused to let civic and police officers enter the compound.

Civic officials were about to start disconnecting water and electricity, as a prelude to eviction that seems inevitable.

There will be no demolitions today as they have not received such a notice, and that gives them hope for a miracle. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has asked the Centre's top lawyer, the Attorney General, for opinion on whether the homes can be saved.

The Supreme Court's deadline to vacate 102 flats ended on Monday. Those living in these flats don't have an occupation certificate.

Seven high-rises were constructed at the Campa Cola Compound between 1981 and 1989. The builders had permission for only six floors, but constructed several more. One of the buildings, Midtown, has 20 floors. Another building, Orchid, has 17.

Mumbai's civic body decided to bring down the 35 illegal floors in the seven high-rises in the compound after the Supreme Court refused to regularise them.

The fight to save the flats took on a political dimension with the state's ruling Congress and the opposition Shiv Sena both coming out in support of the residents.

There have been calls for an ordinance, or a special executive order, to save the Campa Cola homes.
