| The BJP is being censured by other parties over its alleged plans to publicly "honour" two leaders accused of fuelling the communal riots in Muzaffarnagar in which at least 60 people were killed.
Yesterday, a party spokesperson told NDTV that the two state legislators - Sangeet Som and Suresh Rana- would be garlanded at Narendra Modi's rally in Agra on Thursday. However, he made it clear that the state leaders were unlikely to share the stage with the BJP's prime ministerial candidate.
"They want to disrupt the brotherhood between Hindus and Muslims," said Naresh Agarwal of the Samajwadi Party, which governs Uttar Pradesh. "This is their culture," he said.
BJP chief Rajnath Singh today said that he is not aware of plans to felicitate the controversial leaders.
At least 60 people were killed and 40,000 forced to move into make-shift refugee camps in the Hindu-Muslim violence that seared Muzaffarnagar in western UP. The army was called in to quell the riots.
Sangeet Som and Suresh Rana of the BJP are among a group of politicians accused of fueling the deadly violence. They spent over a month in jail before being granted bail. (Muzaffarnagar riots: BJP MLAs Sangeet Som, Suresh Rana get relief from Advisory Board)
The Congress and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav have accused the BJP of instigating the Muzaffarnagar riots to polarise the state along religious lines before general elections next year.
The BJP has denied the charges and has accused Mr Yadav's government of enforcing policies tilted heavily in favour of Muslims, ingesting a sense of insecurity among Hindus in the region
