| A Uttar Pradesh minister has been caught on camera slapping a person in a village in Varanasi.
Surender Singh Patel, Minister of State for Public Works Department, was visiting the Rohania village yesterday to promote a government-sponsored blanket drive when the incident took place.
"Whatever is being shown in media is false. I did not hit the man. He is my nephew and was there with us to distribute blankets. I only signalled him to get blankets," Mr Patel today clarified.
"He was not one of the poor. Poor people don't wear slippers, do not have full clothes on their bodies," Mr Patel added.
The incident will cause major embarrassment for Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav who had promised to wipe out hooliganism and lawlessness from the state when he was voted to power with an impressive mandate by UP's electorate in 2012. His biggest criticism till date has been his government's failure to sanitise the state of 'goonda raj' or lawlessness.
