| Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party or AAP, has contracted a new controversy by allegedly stating that the media has been "bought" with "large amounts" to promote Narendra Modi, who is the BJP's prime ministerial candidate.
The comments, which Mr Kejriwal reportedly made at a fund-raising dinner in Nagpur, Maharashtra, on Thursday, were shown as part of a video aired by a television channel. Today, he denied making the statements which evoked sharp criticism from other parties.
"For the last one year, we have been told that Modi is here, Modi is there. For the last one year, Modi has also been saying that. Even some TV channels have been saying that 'Ram Rajya' has come and corruption has vanished...Why did they do it? Because money has been paid to TV channels. Heavy amounts have been paid to promote Modi," Mr Kejriwal allegedly said in the video, whose authenticity cannot be verified by NDTV.
Hitting out at the media for focusing on what sort of security he uses, he charged that the "whole media is sold this time, it is a big conspiracy, it is a huge political controversy. If our government comes to power then we will set up an inquiry into this. And along with the mediawallahs, all will be sent to jail".
But today, Mr Kejriwal, who is touring Maharashtra, said, "I didn't say that. I didn't say anything. How can I be upset with you (media)?"
