Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray talks to NDTV about the recent tension with the BJP over its expression of interest in his estranged cousin Raj Thackeray, who heads the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena or MNS.
Here are the highlights of what he said:
•Shiv Sena isn't a party that was created yesterday. We have been a party for 40-45 years. Many people have dreamt of splitting the Shiv Sena but those dreams have remained dreams.
• (On Gadkari-Raj Thackeray meeting) I don't think I should speak on this matter. If someone from my party goes and meets someone - how will the party function?
•Both Rajnath Singh and Narendra Modi spoke to me and assured me.
•I remember a time when there was pressure to remove Narendra Modi as Gujarat chief minister. All the allies were against Modi. Balasaheb made a public statement in favour of Modi. So we have very old relations.
•Rajnath Singh has said in clear terms that there have been no ties with the MNS.
•Do you find me stressed about elections? Cousins coming together has no relation to the Lok Sabha elections.
•I have been with the BJP. When they decided on Narendra Modi's name as PM, Modi spoke to me first... and I extended support as soon as his name was announced.
•He left the Shiv Sena because of me. Now he wants people to believe that if I call him, everything will be settled.
•There was a time when MNS - Shiv Sena split benefited the Congress- NCP alliance but no more.
•My focus is to dislodge the Congress-NCP alliance and people want a change.
•There are many people who have gone from here to Delhi - Sharad Pawar, Shinde, Prithviraj - they haven't spoken up for Maharashtra in Delhi. They don't have the courage to speak up. Our MPs speak up but we aren't in power.
•Sharad Pawar was Balasaheb's friend. But Balasaheb was his heavy critic.
•Friendship has its own place. That shouldn't impact politics.
•I'm not Nitin Gadkari's enemy.
