Narendra Modi's 'Caste' Comeback
Narendra Modi's 'Caste' Comeback for Priyanka's 'Neech Rajniti' Comment
 INDIA , 6-May-2014  3:21:58 AM
Narendra Modi today had a searing comeback for Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's comment yesterday attacking his "neech rajniti or low-level politics" after he campaigned in Amethi, her brother Rahul's constituency.

"You said 'Neech Rajniti'. The Congress is not able to digest the truth and they have resorted to casteist comments...I cannot deny that I was born into a lower caste, but is that a crime? I may be from a lower caste but my politics is not low level; my dream are big," Mr Modi said at a rally in Domariyaganj in Uttar Pradesh.

"Look at their audacity..they are abusing us because we're from lower castes. 60 years after independence look at their mentality. I can only pray that God gives them wisdom."

He also remarked that the Election Commission should take note, but had "compulsions".

On Monday, Mr Modi campaigned on Rahul Gandhi's turf, Amethi, and, for the first time, also attacked Priyanka Gandhi directly for what he called her "arrogance".

In response, she declared that for his "neech rajniti (low-level politics)", each polling booth in Amethi will exact revenge. Without naming Mr Modi, Priyanka said, "They have insulted my martyred father in Amethi...the people here will never forgive him."

Amethi was also the constituency of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who was assassinated in 1991. His son, Rahul, has represented it in Parliament since 2004.

The BJP has alleged that Ms Vadra's comment stems from a "feudal mindset."

"Particularly with Modi they have a feudal mindset and for them the poor people, generally from the backward class, have been treated as a vote bank. They are realising that somebody from that class is coming up as a Prime Minister, he is popular, " said the BJP's Siddharth Nath Singh.
