| A BJP protest in Varanasi against the denial of permission to a Narendra Modi rally in the city has ended some time before the party's prime ministerial candidate is scheduled to land in the city. (Track LIVE updates)
For about three hours, party workers shouted slogans and protested against the Election Commission at the Lanka Gate outside the historic Banaras Hindu University, in scorching heat, led by top leaders Arun Jaitley and Amit Shah. (In Varanasi, BJP's Day of Protests)
The BJP has demanded the removal of Returning Officer Pranjal Yadav, who reportedly denied permission for Mr Modi's proposed rally at Benia Bagh in Varanasi today. (Watch: Varanasi Debates Decision of District Magistrate Pranjal Yadav)
Later this afternoon, Mr Modi is scheduled to land by helicopter to address a rally on the outskirts of Varanasi before driving through the city to his party's headquarters in a large roadshow that BJP leaders said "will be larger than any rally." Last month, a sea of saffron had surged in Varanasi as Narendra Modi took out a roadshow before filing his nomination papers.
The BJP had planned three Modi events today. While permission for the rally was denied, clearance for the other two - prayers on the banks of the Ganga and a meet with 150 citizens at a local hotel - came last evening. Mr Jaitley told NDTV, "Why should we do Ganga pujan when permissions were sent at 2 am?" (Modi Rally Permission Was Given, Then Withdrawn)
This morning Mr Modi questioned the Election Commission's neutrality and tweeted, "My profound apologies to Ganga Maa for not being able to perform Aarti today."
