Congress Unchanged. Gandhis' Offer
Congress Unchanged. Gandhis' Offer to Resign Rejected
 INDIA , 19-May-2014  10:3:3 AM
After the Congress' colossal defeat in the national election, its top two leaders, Sonia and Rahul Gandhi offered today to resign as president and vice-president, but their colleagues rejected the proposal immediately. (Remove Rahul, Bring Priyanka, Say Congress Posters in Allahabad)

The development illustrates the party's unwillingness to unhinge itself from its First Family despite being saddled with its worst result ever after a campaign that was fronted by Mr Gandhi, 43.

The Congress won just 44 of Parliament's 543 seats, while the Opposition BJP, powered by Narendra Modi, amassed the strongest result by a party in nearly 30 years, landing a parliamentary majority.

The highest decision-making body of the Congress, the Working Committee, assembled to post-mortem its humiliating performance, but seems to have functioned as a support group for the Gandhis. It has entrusted Mrs Gandhi, 67, to developing a road-map for change. The gesture will be interpreted as a return to centre-stage for Mrs Gandhi, after a lacklustre attempt by her son and his advisors to take charge.

"They are the best leadership we have," said Amarinder Singh, who attended the meeting, on the decision to reject the Gandhis' proposal to quit. "It was a collective responsibility," he added .

Kamal Nath, the most senior Congress parliamentarian, told NDTV on Sunday that only internal democracy could end "the culture of patronage" and elections must be held to select the 40-odd members of Working Committee
