Great Expectations As Narendra Modi
Great Expectations As Narendra Modi, Nawaz Sharif Meet
 INDIA , 27-May-2014  4:6:53 AM
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is meeting his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif as part of a series of bilateral meetings with South Asian leaders who witnessed his inauguration on Monday.

At the Hyderabad House in the heart of Delhi, Mr Modi first met Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and others before Mr Sharif. New Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj is with him for these interactions.

Mr Modi's meeting with the Pakistan Prime Minister takes place after a long spell of frosty ties over the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks and tension along the border. Officials said, "These are not structured meetings. We don't expect any major announcements. They are more of courtesy calls."

On Monday, Mr Sharif told NDTV, "We should remove fears, mistrust and misgivings about each other. Both countries should rid the region of instability and security that has plagued us for decades."

Mr Sharif said he wanted to pick up the broken threads from where then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and he had left off in 1999, just before the Kargil conflict, in which India fought back Pakistani troops who had seized posts in the mountains on the Indian side.

Before heading to the Hyderabad House for his meeting with the new Prime Minister, Mr Sharif visited the Red Fort, Chandni Chowk and Jama Masjid in the old quarters of Delhi.

Syed Ahmed Bukhari, the Shahi Imam or head priest of Jama Masjid, quoted Mr Sharif as saying that he has come to India with a "message of peace and to build closer ties."

Yesterday, the two prime ministers talked about their mothers when they met briefly after the swearing in ceremony.
