| Amid growing outrage over the gang-rape of two teen sisters from Badaun in Uttar Pradesh, the Akhilesh Yadav-led government has dismissed two policemen who allegedly did not act soon enough on the complaint of the girls' family.
The girls, who were cousins aged 14 and 15, were found hanging from a tree in their village on Wednesday morning. The father of one of them says they could have been saved had the police acted in time.
He alleges that when the girls went missing from their home on Tuesday night, after they stepped out to go to the bathroom, their brother went looking for them and returned to tell him that they had been abducted by some men from the village. When the family went to the accused's house to confront them, the father added, they admitted to abducting the girls and said they were in their custody but refused to release them. One of the accused policemen was also present at the accused's house at the time, the girl's father has said.
The girls' family alleges that when they approached the local police for help, they refused to register a first information report. While they were unsuccessfully trying to convince them came the news that the girls were found hanging from a tree in an orchard in their village.
A case of rape and murder was reportedly registered against four men only after angry villagers protested against the alleged police apathy. Three cops were later booked for criminal conspiracy, two of them were initially suspended.
Of the seven accused, three have been arrested so far. Four others are still at large.
Initial medical examination has confirmed that the girls were raped and died from hanging.
Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had assured yesterday that "whoever is found guilty in the case will be punished." His political rival, former Chief Minister and BSP chief Mayawati, has demanded a CBI probe into the incident.
