| The Akhilesh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh today took tough measures to stop the BJP from holding a "Mahapanchayat" or large gathering at the Moradabad district that has been witnessing communal tension for a month.
Three BJP MPs and the party's legislator Sangeet Som - who was accused in the Muzaffarnagar riots - were detained as they tried to defy a ban on the Mahapanchayat. Kunwar Singh Tanwar, the MP from Amroha, Satyapal Saini from Sambhal and Nepal Singh, the Rampur MP, were detained along with Mr Som as they all tried to head towards Kanth area.
Police sources said they are making every effort to ward against a repeat of the September communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar after incendiary political rallies and speeches in the aftermath of the killing of two Jat brothers and a Muslim youth.
The BJP had announced the big gathering to whip up support to restore a loudspeaker at a temple in Kanth, about 40 km from the Moradabad city limits.
About a month ago, a minority community had objected to the loudspeaker, after which the district administration stepped in to remove it. This allegedly led to communal tension. Two weeks ago, BJP workers who tried to protest in the area clashed with policemen.
