| Sachin Tendulkar and Rekha have hardly attended Parliament since they became members of the Rajya Sabha in 2012 and their colleagues today questioned their prolonged absence.
"If they are absent for 60 days, their seat can be vacated," CPI member P Rajeev said in the house. (Track LIVE updates from Parliament here)
He said the ace cricketer, who retired last year, has attended house just for three days. Veteran actress Rekha has come to the house just seven days.
The Rajya Sabha deputy chairman said, however, that Sachin had been absent for 40 days, and Rekha, less than that. "No violation of the Constitution has occurred," he said.
A member has to be absent for 60 days without permission, to warrant any action.
A host of celebrity parliamentarians have been strongly criticised for their poor attendance. Among them are BJP leaders and actors Hema Malini and Shatrughan Sinha.
But Sachin Tendulkar has the worst attendance record of all.
Sachin, one of the all-time cricketing greats, has not attended a single session of Parliament this year. He made it to just three days last year and has so far not participated in any debates in the House.
The 41-year-old had promised to be a vocal supporter of sport when he was sworn in as a member in June 2012.
