 INDIA , 17-October-2014  4:48:4 AM
J Jayalalithaa has been granted bail by the Supreme Court in a corruption case on medical grounds. The former Tamil Nadu chief minister has been in a Bangalore jail for three weeks after she was convicted and sentenced to four years in prison by trial court.

1The Supreme Court while granting bail today, said the AIADMK chief must advise her party's workers to remain calm and behave decorously. BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has complained that following Ms Jayalalithaa's conviction, her followers allegedly made threats and damaged property in violent protests.

2The top court has directed Ms Jayalalithaa's lawyers to ready all documents within two months to facilitate an early disposal of her appeal in the Karnataka High Court against her sentence. It said it would on December 18, ask the High Court to decide on the case within three months of that date.

3The court said that if the papers were not filed by then, bail would be canceled. Ms Jayalalithaa's lawyer, constitutional expert Fali Nariman assured the court that they would ready documents within six weeks and would ask for speedy disposal of her appeal.

4Ms Jayalalithaa is expected to be released from jail today or early tomorrow, if paperwork is not completed. Her ecstatic supporters are celebrating and say the joyous festival of Diwali has come a week early for them. (Read more...)

5On September 27, a special court in Bangalore convicted Ms Jayalalithaa after finding her guilty of amassing wealth disproportionate to her known sources of income during her first tenure as chief minister from 1991 to 1996. (Also read: How Jayalalithaa's 18 Year-Long Trial Ended in 7 Minutes)

6She sought bail and appealed against her sentence in the Karnataka High Court, which Court rejected her bail plea on October 7. She then moved the Supreme Court seeking bail and asking it to suspend her sentence.
