2 Months After Polls, BJP and PDP
2 Months After Polls, BJP and PDP Announce Coalition in Jammu and Kashmir
 INDIA , 24-February-2015  6:57:26 AM
BJP chief Amit Shah and Peoples Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti have announced a coalition in Jammu and Kashmir, two months after the state election results were declared. The announcement was made after a much-anticipated meeting between Mr Shah and Ms Mufti in Delhi today.

"We will form the government with PDP in Jammu and Kashmir," said Mr Shah, adding that details of the "agenda of the alliance will come soon".

Sources said the new government headed by PDP chief Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is expected to be sworn in on Sunday, March 1, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi could attend.

This alliance between the two parties, perceived as ideological opposites, is "not for power, but to win people's hearts," said Ms Mufti after the meeting.

Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is expected in Delhi tomorrow to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the parties could make public a common minimum programme or CMP on the basis of which they will govern Jammu and Kashmir.

In the Assembly polls held in December last year, the PDP was the single largest party with 28 seats, while the BJP was second with 25 seats in the 87-member House.

Sources said they have agreed to maintain the state's constitutional status - a key demand of Mr Mufti, who has firmly opposed any attempt to weaken Article 370, which grants special status to J&K. It makes the consent of the state government necessary for laws except those related to defence or national security and the state's residents and regional political parties see it as vital for its autonomy.

The BJP has earlier talked about abrogating Article 370, but none of its leaders mentioned it in their campaign speeches in the last election.
