| Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's remarks crediting Pakistan and the Hurriyat Conference for the smooth conduct of assembly polls in the state last year has triggered a massive political controversy.
"I want to say on record and I have told this to the Prime Minister, that we must credit the Hurriyat, Pakistan and militant outfits for the conduct of assembly elections in the state," Mr Sayeed said on Sunday, soon after the swearing-in of the PDP-BJP coalition government.
Here are some of the political reactions:
Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister: "Our government and BJP fully dissociates with the statement of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed crediting Pakistan and Hurriyat for smooth conduct of assembly polls."
Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha: "He (Sayeed) will know that the entire House is against his remarks. It (smooth elections) happened because of people of the state, the government servants, but they are saying it happened due to Pakistan. The Prime Minister should come and condemn the remarks. What has the Chief Minister told the Prime Minister?"
Mehbooba Mufti, PDP leader: "My father is a man of peace, he believes in the democratic process... There was less violence this time compared to the Lok Sabha polls."
Omar Abdullah, National Conference leader and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister: "Has Mufti decided the Modi-Mufti accord was a mistake? Are the Father-Daughter duo trying to force BJP to break off the alliance? #wondering,"
Shashi Tharoor, Leader, Congress: "The honeymoon didn't seem to last very long because today, the Home Minister has dissociated his government and party from the statement of his partner and has more or less discredited his partner by saying that the conversation with the Prime Minister that the Chief Minister claimed has happened, has never happened."
