On Separatist Masarat Alam's Releas
On Separatist Masarat Alam's Release, PDP Says Centre Should Have Known
 INDIA , 10-March-2015  9:39:22 AM
The government was today accused by opposition parties of misleading Parliament on separatist Masarat Alam's release from jail, after letters exclusively accessed by NDTV revealed that the decision was taken when Jammu and Kashmir was under central rule.

Amit Shah, the president of the ruling BJP, summoned the party's Nirmal Singh, who is the state's Deputy Chief Minister, to Delhi in the evening. Sources say Mr Shah asserted in the meeting that it is "not the BJP's priority to remain in government and the party has zero tolerance against terrorist and separatism."

The ruling party faced tough questions after two letters showed that the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed government, which took power in Jammu and Kashmir on March 1, had no direct role in the separatist's release. This contradicted the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who on Monday said that the state government led by his ally had not consulted his government. "I share the opposition's aakrosh (anger)," he had said in Parliament.

In Kashmir, the PDP said Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh should have known about the decision.

"There is in the public domain a letter that the release was ordered on February 2 when there was governor's rule here, so the union home minister should know about it," said PDP's Haseeb Drabu, the Jammu and Kashmir Finance Minister.

The state home department had flagged in a letter on February 4 that a detention order against Masarat Alam had lapsed and he could not be kept in jail without any charges
