Farmer From Rajasthan Hangs Himself
Farmer From Rajasthan Hangs Himself at AAP Rally
 INDIA , 22-April-2015  8:0:56 AM
A farmer from Rajasthan climbed a tree and hanged himself in front of hundreds of people at an Aam Aadmi Party rally in Delhi, including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who later battled sharp criticism for continuing with the event even after the incident.

Gajender Singh Rajput, 41, from Rajasthan's Dausa district, left a suicide note in which he talked about being unable to feed his three children anymore. "My father drove me out of home because my crop failed. Please tell me, how do I go home?" the note said.

AAP had called the farmers' rally at the city's Jantar Mantar to protest against the Centre's land acquisition bill.

Gajender first caught the attention of the people by waving a broom, balanced precariously on a branch. AAP leaders and others climbed after him urging him to come down.

The tree was just a few metres from the stage where Mr Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia were seated.

Within moments, the man had hung himself, as the crowd watched in shock and horror. He fell to the ground and was immediately taken to hospital, where he was declared dead.

About 20 minutes after the man was taken away, Mr Kejriwal told the crowd, "I feel sad that before our eyes he climbed the tree. I kept telling the police to save him. The police are not in our control, but at least they are under god's control."

As politics exploded over the suicide, AAP and Mr Kejriwal were accused of extreme insensitivity by rival parties. "Is politics more important than someone's life?" questioned BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra
