As Arvind Kejriwal Preps to Rumble With Centre, a Public Cabinet Meeting Today: 10 Facts

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's cabinet meeting today will be held in front of thousands of people at a park in the heart of the capital. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has completed 100 days in office, plans to escalate its power battle with the Centre at this meeting.

1In the meeting - dubbed "Janta ki Cabinet, Janta ke Beech (people's cabinet)" - at Central Park in Connaught Place, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is expected to push for full statehood for Delhi and call for a referendum.

2Huge traffic jams are anticipated in the city because of the rally, in which AAP expects over six thousand people. The traffic police have asked people to avoid the area between 5 and 7 pm.

3Sources say the entire council of ministers will be on the stage and around it, chairs are being set up for all AAP lawmakers and the public. LED screens have been put up outside the park

4The AAP government has also called a special two-day emergency session tomorrow to discuss what many believe is a constitutional crisis in the making, after the Centre issued a circular backing Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung in a turf war with the Chief Minister.

5AAP alleges that the ruling BJP is trying to govern Delhi through the Lieutenant Governor, who acts as the Centre's representative in the capital and is vested with significant powers as Delhi is a Union Territory and not a full state.

6After days of tussle between the Lieutenant Governor and the Chief Minister over bureaucratic appointments, the Centre stepped in on Friday and issued a circular saying that Mr Jung was not obliged to consult the Delhi government on these appointments.
