Five Terrorists Killed, A Sixth's Body Not Yet Recovered
 INDIA , 4-January-2016  11:18:49 AM
Military operations are still on at the Pathankot air force base and sources do not rule out the presence of more terrorists. The National Security Guard or NSG has confirmed that five terrorists have been killed.

1Union minister Arun Jaitley said the terrorists who attacked the Pathankot base were a "suicide squad" and wanted to "damage our Air Force assets." The minister said security forces "took prompt action" and minimised damage.

2The aim, the minister said, "Was to capture alive or liquidate terrorists." The operations were long because the air base is huge, he said.

3After hours of no firing or explosion being heard, there was sporadic gunfire at about 5.30 pm on Monday, sources said.

4Reports had so far suggested that six terrorists attacked the base early on Saturday morning, and four died earlier in the gunbattle. Two were reported to be still hiding in a building where Air Force personnel live with their families.

5Heavy firing was heard in the morning as the military launched operations to flush out the remaining terrorists. "We have eliminated a fifth terrorist and combing operations are on," said a senior officer of the NSG on Monday evening.

6Sources said the death of the sixth terrorist was not confirmed as his body had not been identified.

7The NSG said all families were safe and "all air base assets have been secured and are safe." An officer said operations would continue till the base was searched, sanitised and secure.

8The terrorists are believed to have crossed over into India on the intervening night of December 30-31. An alert was sounded after they abducted a senior policeman and hijacked his car.

9They entered the base some time between Friday and Saturday. Sources said had they got in earlier, they would have got access to the technical area and oil dumps,
