Vijay Mallya Doesn't Appear Before
Vijay Mallya Doesn't Appear Before Enforcement Directorate, Seeks Time Till May
 INDIA , 9-April-2016  4:45:16 AM
Liquor baron Vijay Mallya failed to appear before the Enforcement Directorate for the third time today in connection with a money-laundering case. He has sought time till May to reply to the ED notice, seeking his personal appearance in the matter.

Mr Mallya is being probed by the agency for his alleged involvement in a 900-crore loan scam. The agency had last week issued summons to him for the third time asking him to appear before it on April 9. He had failed to appear before it on two earlier dates - March 18 and April 2.

Officials said Mr Mallya has informed the Investigating Officer (IO) of the case in Mumbai that he will be unable to depose personally today because of the ongoing legal proceedings against him in the Supreme Court. However, it is understood that he has suggested his legal team can help the ED in taking the probe forward.

Last week too - he had sought time till May but his request was turned down. The ED is expected to decide on Monday whether to take legal action against him, or grant him the time he has sought.

ED officials had earlier hinted that the April 9 summons could possibly be the last to Mr Mallya as under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), such action can be undertaken for a maximum of three times only.

It is understood that Mr Mallya, while seeking the extensions, had informed the IO that cases related to bank loans were currently sub-judice in the Supreme Court and he was trying to settle these loans with the help of his legal and corporate team and, hence, would require some more time.
