Fog hits flights, trains on NewYear
Passengers stranded at Delhi airport on Monday with many flights delayed, diverted or cancelled due to fog
 INDIA , 2-January-2007  2:39:34 AM
Dense fog that engulfed the whole of Delhi and neighbouring areas on Sunday night completely paralysed flight operations at Delhi airport leading to cancellation of at least 16 domestic flights, while many incoming international and domestic flights had to be diverted.

The fog reduced the visibility to 50 metres and the runway visual range (RVR) to 150 metres. As a result, only aircraft equipped with advanced CAT-IIIB instrument landing system were able to operate. Between 9 p.m. on Sunday night and 10 a.m. on Monday morning, only 10 flights could be operated. As many as 16 domestic flights were cancelled and 11 rescheduled. Another 36 flights, including 12 of international carriers, had to be diverted to other cities. For passengers who had to catch flights operating at night, it was an endless wait.

It was only on Monday afternoon that the situation improved and flights were resumed by using low visibility procedures (LVP) as the visibility remained around 800 metres. The visibility improved to 900 metres in the evening, but still LVP remained operational to ensure smooth operation of flights.

Trains badly hit

Train services in the Capital were badly affected, too. More than 50 trains were running hours behind schedule on Monday.

With trains reaching the city late, Northern Railway had to reschedule at least 17 of them, including the August Kranti Rajdhani, Howrah Rajdhani, Mumbai Rajdhani, Sealdah Rajdhani, Poorva Express, Shramjivi Express and Shalimar Express.

Due to heavy fog, it was also decided to cancel Unchahar Express operating between Ambala and Allahabad till January 31, while five trains -- Kalindi Express, Lal Qila Express, Udyan Abha Express, Mugalsarai-Bareilly Passenger and Howrah-Janata Express -- would remain partially cancelled till January-end
