| The `Tamizhar Kalachara Vilaiyattu Kazhagam,' a new forum floated in support of `jallikattu' (bull taming), `rekela' (bullock cart) race and such other events, has urged the State Government to take steps to lift the ban imposed on the rural sports by the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court.
Addressing presspersons here on Monday, All India Moovender Munnani Kazhagam founder-president N. Sethuraman said Dalit Panthers of India legislators agreed to raise the issue in the coming Assembly session. He maintained that banning the events would amount to destroying the cultural identity of Tamils. "When butchering the animals and tasting their meat are permitted in this land, how adventurous sports could be prohibited by citing the enactments on prevention of cruelty to animals," he asked.
On charges of meting out harsh treatment to the animals, he said that there might be one or two stray incidents but they could not be a reason for forbidding all the events of that nature.
Parrying questions on the loss of human lives, he asked, "Can you stop travelling just because road accidents have become a common phenomenon." He said the forum was prepared to abide by the rules and regulations that could be framed by the Government.
