Fog plays the villain again inDelhi
An endless wait for flights at Delhi airport on
 INDIA , 3-January-2007  1:11:40 AM
Air and rail traffic was disrupted for the third day in a row on Tuesday because of dense fog that enveloped the whole of Delhi and neighbouring areas. Trains and flight schedules were thrown into disarray again, causing immense inconvenience to passengers.

Flight operations at Delhi airport were affected for much of Tuesday due to poor visibility. Airport authorities said Low Visibility Procedures were enforced from 8-42 p.m. on Monday to 1-26 p.m. on Tuesday. A total of 430 flights operated during this period, of which 134 operated past midnight. Of the flights departing from Delhi on Tuesday, 11 domestic and four international had to be rescheduled.

The domestic flights were the worst hit by the fog, as 36 arrivals and 50 departures had to be cancelled on Tuesday. One international arrival and one departure were also cancelled.

Quoting the Meteorological Department, airport authorities said fog could recur late in the evening on Tuesday taking the general visibility down to 200 metres.

Even as many passengers complained of inadequate arrangements at the airport, the authorities said free park-and-ride facility had been set up near the domestic airport and temporary cabins had been erected outside Terminal 1B for passengers.

Train services were also badly disrupted because of the thick blanket of fog over North India.

According to Northern Railway, 32 trains were delayed, five rescheduled and 10 cancelled or partly cancelled on Tuesday. The Amrapali Express between Katihar and Delhi was running 11 hours behind schedule, while the Jammu-Jaipur Express between Jammu and Jaipur via Delhi and the Farakka Express running between Malda and Delhi were both seven hours late. The Kashi Vishwanath Express running between Varanasi and Delhi was 10 hours behind schedule.
