Varsity to get Highways department
The Highways Research station at Guindy that will move to Taramani
 INDIA , 3-January-2007  1:38:8 AM
Anna University will get the 38.27-acre land on Sardar Patel Road, Guindy where the Highways department is located. In return, the university will give part of its land at Taramani to the department.

The university will fund construction of the building for the department's offices as also the office and laboratories of the Highways Research station.

The development essentially means that the university will be able to build its ambitious Rs.150-crore administrative complex at the Guindy site. The rooms in the College of Engineering used by the administrative wings can be used for academic activity.

According to Vice Chancellor, D. Viswanathan, after the government decided to drop the proposal to create a Secretariat complex in the northern side of the existing premises, the question of using the Highways department's land came up.

The Higher Education department recommended to the government that the land be transferred permanently to the university and that the Highways department be given land in lieu at Taramani.

Last month, the Government passed orders giving effect to the suggestion.

The order noted that till the new buildings were constructed at Taramani, the Highways department's Superintending Engineer's office as also the laboratories of the Highways Research station could function from Sardar Patel Road.

"We will now have to exchange documents for the lands. The government is also keen that the university expand its infrastructure. We have the funds to create the administrative block in the site that we get," Dr. Viswanathan added.

The Chief Engineering of the Highways department, according to the order, would survey the lands at Taramani for enforcing the transfer.
