Medha warns of indefinite stir
Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar, along with other activists, holds a torch at a demonstration outside the Social Justice Ministry in Delhi
 INDIA , 3-January-2007  1:42:24 AM
Raising the height of the Narmada dam [in Gujarat] without rehabilitating the displaced families is not a New Year gift but a challenge for the people of the valley. By ignoring the rehabilitation of more than 40,000 displaced families in the submergence zone in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat, the Governments are in a way preparing for a kind of `jal samadhi' [watery grave] of people."

Stating this, Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar on Tuesday warned of an indefinite agitation if the displaced families were not rehabilitated in accordance with the Narmada Disputes Tribunal Award and the Supreme Court orders.

Ms. Patkar, who sat on dharna outside the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment here along with nearly 400 displaced people, said they were compelled to rush to New Delhi in "this biting cold" because court orders were violated and people were left out in the cold. The police late in the evening picked up the agitationists, including women, and took them to the Jantar Mantar dharna site, where the sit-in would continue.

"The Narmada dam has been raised to 122 metres and on Sunday Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi declared that the construction of the dam was over. Now they will install gates up to a height of 138 metres, whereas people displaced even at the height of 110 metres remain to be rehabilitated. This has happened despite the assurance given to the apex court on completing rehabilitation by December 31, 2006, before raising the height of the dam. The dam cannot be considered completed until the affected people are rehabilitated."
