| The Ardh Kumbh began in Prayag on Wednesday with lakhs of devotees braving the cold and taking a dip in the holy waters of the Sangam.
Sangam is the confluence of holy rivers Ganga, Yamuna and the mystic Saraswati.
Mehanivanis Akhara led the bathing procession followed by 'Niranjanis' and then other 'AkharasThousands of security personnel have been deployed at the venue to prevent any untoward incident.
Lakhs of people are going to stay for the Ardh Kumbh for as long as a month to do the Kalpvas or the ritual pilgrimage.
The timing of the Kumbh, the month of Magh too is astrologically significant it's the time when the sun moves into the Tropic Of Capricorn signifying Makar Sakranti a time when Allahabad receives the direct rays of the sun.
