Assam hospital raided for criminal
Half-burnt bodies of infants were apparently set on fire with newspapers at the hospital incinerator.
 INDIA , 4-January-2007  1:26:15 AM
Criminal negligence and blatant disregard for the law has been reported from the Guwahati Medical College Hospital, one of Assam's biggest government hospitals.

The Pollution Control Board team carried out a raid to check if the hospital was following the norms of waste disposal. NDTV accompanied the team to record the horrific evidence.

Half-burnt bodies of infants were apparently set on fire with newspapers at the hospital incinerator.

The incinerator hasn't been working properly for months and is in any case meant to only dispose hospital waste not unclaimed dead bodies.

When asked why the half-burnt bodies of infants were just lying around, a sweeper of the hospital informed the team that "they are here to be disposed."

Infection spread

The bodies weren't the only horrors discovered by the team, which was headed by Pollution Control Board Chairman J L Dutta.

Disposable surgical gloves were being recycled in the labour ward of the High Risk Monitoring Room.

Dutta: These are disposable gloves and this means they are for one time use only. But now you are reusing them. Once you reuse them, you spread the infection. So from the very beginning you are spreading the infection.

Doctor: We are repeatedly saying that we should not use this. Even for single use the quality is very bad.

Dutta: No, I am telling you that it should be disposable and should be for one use only. I am not concerned about the quality that is your business, you will have to take the best product. It should be used only once, that is the point, you cannot use it twice.
