| President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Friday stressed the need for the police to gear themselves to meet future challenges.
Speaking at the valedictory of the 150th year celebrations of Chennai Metropolitan Police, he visualised India in 2020 to be a nation where governance used the best of technologies to be responsive, transparent, fully connected in a high bandwidth e-governance grid, easily accessible and simple in rules, thereby being less prone to corruption.
There was need to have a coherent thinking among all members of society, including the police. The police force was indeed a partner in the developed India missions. Speaking on specific challenges before the police force, he presented an ideal profile of police, which would play a pivotal role in the transformation of the country, he said. The police force should be friendly, corruption-free, responsible, tolerant to ambiguity and pressure, caring for the people with a sense of compassion and empathy. Police stations ought to be equipped with adequate utility and operational facilities in difficult areas. Senior officers should ensure periodic training.
Police stations should be equipped with operational amenities and electronic connectivity. Accountability flowed from the highest level to the police constable. Hence, the nobility of management had to flow from the top, he said.
