| The Tamil Nadu Government has directed the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) to prepare a fresh draft Second Master Plan. It has returned the earlier draft Master Plan the CMDA submitted in December 2005.
The directive suggests that the CMDA incorporate the developments the city has witnessed in the last few years.
The CMDA has written to local bodies within the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA) asking them to give suggestions and opinion within 60 days. After receiving the feedback, it will prepare the Master Plan anew. After receiving Government consent, the plan will be placed for public opinion.
The CMA comprises 306 villages in 10 panchayat unions, 28 town panchayats, eight municipalities and a cantonment spread over 1,177 sq. km.
The first Master plan for Chennai was prepared in 1975. The Second Master Plan was drafted in 1994 and public opinion solicited in 1995. It was criticised for lack of public consultations among other things. It was later revised, updated and submitted afresh.
Many developments have taken place since 1975. The CMA population has touched 6.42 million as per the 2001 census.
