| Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Sunday launched the free liquefied petroleum gas connection and stove scheme of the State Government, one of its kind in the country, and declared that his Government was committed to welfare of the poor, landless, and women.
Handing over the equipment to 10 beneficiaries at a function in the Thousand Lights Assembly constituency, he said yet another electoral promise was being fulfilled with the launch.
It was a pointer to the fact that his party's election promises were not merely promises as the Opposition made them out to be, Mr. Karunanidhi said. The schemes were not means to entice the voters, but tools to improve the living standard of the poor and reduce their burden.
The free LPG scheme, under which all households without the connection and stove, would be covered over the next four years, followed implementation of many other electoral promises within one year of his government coming to power. They included supply of rice under the public distribution system at Rs.2 a kg and provision of two eggs under the noon-meal programme, free land for the landless and free colour television to poor households.
