| Tata Motors starts work at Singur |
| Protesters set fire to a portion of the fence

| In the midst of political controversies and protests, the Tata Motors on Sunday began construction work of its car manufacturing plant at Singur in West Bengal after a brief ceremony and distribution of sweets.
However, hours later, a group of people destroyed a portion of the fence at the site.
By the time the police reached the spot, those responsible escaped.
The incident took place after some leaders of the Krishi Jami Raksha Committee, headed by the Trinamool Congress that is campaigning against the setting up of the plant, gathered near Beraberi.
Prohibitory orders under Section 144 Cr.P.C. are in force in the area.
Protesters made an attempt last week to storm the site. They fled after trying to uproot the poles and damaging a portion of the fence.
