Delhi school to get heritage look
The school at Mandir Marg in New Delhi
 INDIA , 22-January-2007  4:25:52 AM
N. P. Boys Senior Secondary School's claim to fame so far may have been having legendary singer Mukesh as its alumni. But this is set to change.

A sprawling building near Gole Market, it will soon become the first Government school in the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) area to be conserved.

"It is our star project that we are very proud of. I think this is the first Government school to be restored in Delhi. The other exciting element of the project is that the building will be conserved while the school is still functioning,'' informs NDMC chairperson Sindhushree Khullar.

An extension of the NDMC project of restoring the Gole Market area back to its original glory, N. P. Boys Senior Secondary School will complete the heritage "look'' of the place. And while it may form only a tiny bit of the project, it has a big mission to accomplish -- making students proud of studying in a heritage building.

An imposing building, N. P. Boys Senior Secondary School is perhaps one of the best buildings in the Gole Market block, but with boys rushing through its pillared corridors for years, it had started showing its age.

"There had been alterations like water-pipes that have been added to the building. The paving has also been changed. The project involves restoring the external shell and some element of landscaping of its surroundings. The honour-roll of the school will also be replaced so that it looks like the one which used to hang in the old days,'' says Abha Narain Lamba, Mumbai-based conservation architect, who is a consultant on the project. Apart from introducing a little bit of green to the dusty playground where the students spend their spare time playing football, the sunny pillared corridors will also be restored to their original glory.
