| The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the conviction of Navjot Singh Sidhu in a road rage death case.
A stay on a criminal conviction as happened for the first time in the 57-year history of the Supreme Court.
The unprecedented move came as a big relief for the ex-BJP MP from Amritsar.
Sidhu reacted to the judgement in his inimitable style, saying the court's order was like the word of God for him.
"As I came out, my 'guru' Arun Jaitley told me, Navjot, the Almighty takes care of good and evil, why do you keep getting disappointed? This is the right time, to step into politics, all of Hindustan trusts you," said Navjot Singh Sidhu, Former MP.
In Patiala, Jaswinder Singh, the nephew of Gurnam Singh who lost his life in 1988 incident, expressed disappointment.
"The family is feeling bad. If this is how things are, then every MP and MLA who has a criminal record can participate in the elections. We are satisfied with the court's order. The party should not give tickets to people who have murdered," he said.
Lok Sabha elections
The former MP can now contest the by-election to the Lok Sabha seat, which had fallen vacant following his resignation.
Time was running out for him as the last date for filing of nominations for the LS seat is January 25, 2007.
Sidhu was sentenced to three years imprisonment by the Punjab and Haryana High Court for the offence of culpable homicide, not amounting to murder in a 1988 road rage case.
He was found guilty of causing the death of a man following an altercation over the parking of a car in Patiala.
