| Eleven children have died while 15 have been rescued from a school building after it collapsed in Surat district on Friday.
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
Portions of the four storeyed building, which housed a library, came down along with a spiral staircase and children standing in that area were trapped under the debris.
"I met my daughter Tejal on December 17. At that time she had told me that this wall could fall anytime. So I had asked her to stay in her room. We are poor and did not have an alternative," said Parvati Behn, victim's mother.
"In 1980 the construction of the building began. In 1994 the building was handed over to the school. One month later a request was made to repair the stairs. An estimate was made and repair was in progress when the incident happened," said Anandi Bhen Patel, Education Minister.
The injured are being treated at the Vyara Referral hospital. The school building was built last year to cater to the education of tribal girls.
The school is located in Tichakpura village of Surat and people from the village were the first to reach the spot.
They brought along their own equipment and started the rescue work much before the authorities arrived.
The school is located within the campus of the government run Adarsh Nivasi Shala.
