Tension in Gorakhpur after violence
Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh is tense a day after two people are killed in communal violence.
 INDIA , 30-January-2007  2:14:31 AM
A new district magistrate and a district police chief have taken charge after their predecessors were suspended.

Three mid-level police officers were also suspended in the wake of the violence.

Six companies of extra forces have taken up positions across Gorakhpur.

The trouble, which started Saturday in a marriage procession and developed into a clash between two communities, comes ahead of state elections.

Leaders held

The governing Samajwadi Party accused the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party of inciting the violence and arrested its controversial MP Yogi Avaidyanath when he staged a procession on Sunday.

Reports said a passenger train was set on fire despite a curfew in the area and some reports added, Adiyanath's supporters had also set fire to buses and trains.

Also, Kesri Nath Tripathi of the BJP was detained by police Tuesday while trying to reach Gorakhpur and Lalji Tandon, the leader of the opposition in the legislature was held near Barabanki.

The opposition says the state government failed to control the situation.

The Minister of State for Agriculture JP Yadav said, "the MP wants unrest in the city, they are doing this on purpose, they want Gorakhpur to burn."

Tandon earlier said, "they [authorities] are not arresting those who are involved in the violence but our people who are wanting to protest peacefully".

Several parts of Gorakhpur are under curfew and a high alert has been ordered in neighbouring towns of Basti and Maharajganj.
