| The nation paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his 59th death anniversary on Tuesday.
President A P J Abdul Kalam lead the country in remembering the Father of the Nation by offering floral tributes at his 'samadhi' Rajghat in New Delhi.
Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Cabinet colleagues and Leader of Opposition L K Advani also offered flowers at Gandhi's samadhi.
The three Chiefs of the Armed Forces were present on the occasion to pay homage to Gandhi on what is observed as 'Martyr's Day'.
The gathering, that included noted Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande, observed a two minutes' silence in memory of Gandhi.
Bhajans, including Gandhi's favourite devotional song Vaishnav Jan To, were played on the occasion.
