| After the activation of a new hotline with their Pakstani counterparts, the Indian Coast Guard is hoping to eliminate the arrest of fishermen straying across maritime borders.
"Presently there has not been much success with the hotline that connects that two Coast Guards.
"But then we hope in the coming days it will be used more effectively," said A Rajasekhar, Commander Coast Guard region (west).
Recently, 12 fishermen from Gujarat were arrested by Pakistani authorities after allegedly straying into their waters.
The Coast Guard is now urging Indian fishermen to equip their boats with Global Positioning System-based devices in order to avoid straying across the border.
Concerns over oil spill
Another concern for the Coast Guard continues to be the danger of oil spills in Indian waters with three incidents reported in the last year alone.
"The Coast Guard is the nodal agency for pollution control in our waters but within port limits it is the responsibility of port authorities to manage the spills.
"We have been in touch with port and state authorities to ensure they maintain their capability to tackle such events," Rajasekhar said.
However, he added that despite requests to ports to conduct an Oil Spill Risk Analysis and equip themselves, the response from them had not been very good.
Due to this the Coast Guard was called in for situations like on March 30, 2006 when a ship ran aground in Karwar and broke into two giving rise to fears of a major oil spill.
