| Work begins on last leg of Road |
| The ground-breaking ceremony for laying the last stretch of Inner Ring Road being performed

| Work on the final 5 km stretch, between Velachery and St. Thomas Mount, of the Inner Ring Road (IRR) is all set to begin.
The "ground breaking ceremony" was performed on Thursday for the Rs. 93.75 crore project.
R.S. Bharathi, Alandur Municipal Chairman, and Pon Shanmugham, Chief Engineer (Projects) of the State Highways Department, were present at the ceremony.
The actual construction of the road, bridges and culverts would cost Rs. 33 crore; the rest will be spent on acquiring land.
A Highways department official said the IRR project was conceived in the 1970s to ease congestion in the city, and improve connectivity between Manali in the north and Tiruvanmiyur in the south.
Work on the northern, central and southern sectors, totalling 46 km, was completed in the early 1990s. But the stretch between Velachery and St. Thomas Mount remained unfinished. The road on this stretch would be 100 feet wide, with 33 feet in the centre reserved for the MRTS line.
About 1.8 lakh sq m of land was needed for the project, officials said, adding that Rs. 60.25 crore had been earmarked for acquisition.
When the first estimates were prepared, only Rs. 9 crore had been allotted for acquiring land.
