Gujarat riot victims still await
Today, the family of five is struggling for survival and for recognition as internally displaced to get whatever little compensation they can.
 INDIA , 2-February-2007  2:38:15 AM
Thousands of Gujarat riot victims turned up for the convention on internally displaced at the Gujarat Vidyapeeth on Thursday denting the state government's claim of successful rehabilitation of the 2002 riot victims.

Riot victim Janbibi and her visually impaired daughter Zarina face an uncertain future. During the 2002 riots their shop, the only source of livelihood, was destroyed and the family fled to a relief camp.

Today, the family of five is struggling for survival and for recognition as internally displaced to get whatever little compensation they can.

Janbibi is still not sure that will she ever return to her village. "We tried to return, but they threatened us, saying we let you go the first time around but we will not give you a second chance," she said.

Internally displaced

Thousands of displaced riot victims like Janbibi attended the convention on the internally displaced people organized by the NGO Anhad.

The NGO released a report claiming that over 20,000 people continued to stay in rehabilitation camps.

"There are about 5000 families, which comes to around 23,000 people. They continue to stay in 69 rehabilitation colonies whose existence the state government is denying," said Shabnam Hashmi, a social activist.

Huge turnout

The Narendra Modi government has all along denied existence of relief camps in the state and maintained that the relief and rehabilitation of the riot victims have been completed.

But the turn out of thousands of internally displaced victims at the convention clearly dents such claims.

"We had visited the camps three months back. There doesn't seem to be any change in the condition now. We will prepare another report once we go back to Delhi, clearly a lot needs to be done," said Dilip Padgaonkar, Member, Minority Commission.

The riot victims also stated their case before a panel comprising members from the National Minorities commission and Planning Commission.
