| Even as Singur went up in teargas and lathicharges by the police, Ratan Tata flew into Kolkata, met Buddhadeb Bhattacharya and reaffirmed his confidence about the small car project coming up on schedule.
The administration has imposed Section 144 at Singur once again but Buddhadeb Bhattacharya said those creating disturbances at Singur were few in number and that the small car project was on track.
For most of Monday, Singur turned into a battlefield with police and members of the Trinamool led West Bengal Krishi Jami Raksha Committee clashing repeatedly.
Tear gas and lathicharges were the order of the day; a vehicle hired by the police was set on fire.
Despite it all, as far as Ratan Tata and Buddhadeb Bhattacharya were concerned, the Tata Motors small car project was on track.
"I am quite confident that with the pace that's on the ground now, we will be able to bring out the car in 2008. I feel very confident that with the West Bengal government we will be able to create jobs and improve livelihoods in the area," said Ratan Tata, Chairman, Tata Group.
"Thousand people are already working on the project. We want to involve all people in the project and as Ratan Tata said, the idea is to improve the quality of life there and we are sure to do it," said West Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharya.
Competitors fuelling trouble
Ratan Tata was in Kolkata to discuss with Bhattacharya a 150-bed cancer hospital he is setting up in the city. But Singur also crept into the agenda. Asked if he would talk to political parties opposing his small car project Ratan Tata laughed away the possibility.
"I am not a politician. We are always ready to dialogue with any reasonable party. But this is not something an industrialist should be involved in. I am just interested in getting the product out and serving the community we are in," said Tata.
The man of steel was also not going back on what he said about competitors fuelling trouble at Singur.
