| Traffic on the Vandalur-Kelambakkam Main Road was disrupted for about half an hour on Tuesday after cadres of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) staged a sit-in, protesting against the arrest of a party member on charges of abusing a woman police sub-inspector the previous night.
While the partymen alleged that police resorted to lathicharge to disperse them, police officials denied the charge.
Vijayalakshmi, a sub inspector of Thazhambur police station was on duty at the Kandigai junction on Monday night when she intercepted three men — Kanniappan, Muthu and Kannan — travelling by a motorcycle. Minutes later, PMK members and neighbours of the three men, led by N. Gopalakrishnan, came to the spot and allegedly misbehaved with the sub-inspector, according to police officials.
However, Thenmozhi, wife of Gopalakrishnan denied the charges against her husband. Her version is that at around 11 p.m., more than a dozen policemen entered her house and took away Gopalakrishnan, along his brother Radhakrishnan, and their friend, Vasudevan. Gopalakrishnan is a local PMK functionary.
M. Ramakrishnan, Revenue Divisional Officer, Chengalpattu, spoke to the police and the PMK members.
