Mumbai's MET college faces flak
But while the MET college reduced its fees, it is showing no sign of reimbursing the extra charges of Rs 70,000 per student.
 INDIA , 7-February-2007  3:49:36 AM
Students of the MET Institute of Management in Bandra, controlled by NCP minister Chhagan Bhujbal, have been paying visits to the state appointed fee-monitoring committee.

The college owes nearly Rs 70 lakh to a group of hundred students. But nearly two years after they have graduated, there is still no sign of the money.

The trouble began in 2003 when the college had yet to fix its fees. It decided to charge a fee of Rs 92,825 per year for the two-year course.

A year later in 2004, the state appointed fee-monitoring committee slashed the charges to Rs 58,300 per year as part of its mandate to fix fees for colleges across the state.

Filing appeals

But while the MET college reduced its fees, it is showing no sign of reimbursing the extra charges of Rs 70,000 per student.

Instead of paying up, the college has put in an appeal with the committee. Frustrated, the students filed a case in the High Court.

"We got an order from the Divisional bench of two judges and the Samiti was given a deadline to fix the fees by 8th December," said Sikandar Siddiqui, Ex-student, MET.

But nearly two months later, the matter has yet to be settled. While the Committee declared the fees as 58,300 yet again, the college simply responded by filing another appeal.

"We will hear the case on the 9th and then take a decision," said Justice Patankar (Retd), Chairman, Shikshan Shulka Samiti.

Cause for worry

The college management spoke to NDTV over the phone and said it would comply with the Committee's decision. But two appeals and two years later, the students say they have every reason to be worried.

"We are still paying off our loans. We don't have any compensation from the college and no consideration at all," said Sikandar Siddiqui, ex-student, METIM.

On December 19, the Samiti decided the fees will be Rs 58,300 and just four days before that on December 15, the college had said they would comply with the Samiti. But they have not.
