| Alleging high-handed behaviour by a senior officer of the Chennai police, Madras High Court advocates resolved to boycott court proceedings on Thursday.
The extraordinary general body meeting of the Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA) met on Wednesday after Joint Commissioner of Police (South) G. Dorairaj reportedly asked a constable to take a senior advocate, S. Duraisamy, to the Mylapore police station.
The trouble began when Mr. Dorairaj stopped Mr. Duraisamy's car for not giving way to his vehicle on Santhome High Road. When the advocate objected to the police officer's behaviour, he ordered a policeman to take the advocate to the police station. As word spread, a large number of advocates rushed to the spot and blocked traffic on the high road. The advocates staged a march from Santhome to the High Court.
They stopped traffic also on NSC Bose Road. Condemning the incident, the MHAA meeting convened by its president R.C. Paul Kanagaraj urged the Chief Minister to "take stringent action against the errant officer and place him under suspension." They resolved to abstain from all courts and tribunals on Thursday.
The police have denied that the lawyer was taken to the police station.
