| Battered by domestic problems, 26-year-old Anu from Hassan arrived here on Sunday with the expectation of getting a job under the aegis of Suvarna Kayaka Yojane.
Accompanied by her grandfather, she was one of the several hundred unemployed young people who took part in the job fair held for the garment sector.
Interface
The Department of Industries and Commerce organised an interface between garment factories and prospective employers at the Government Arts College Ground here.
Daughter of a lorry driver, Ms. Anu decided to participate in the fair owing to the financial crunch that her family had been facing for the past few weeks.
Undeterred at the prospects of living alone, she said, "I have come prepared to start a life in Bangalore and will try to support my family." She has a certificate in tailoring and embroidery.
Shortage of manpower
Venkatesh S. Bhaskar of a garment company said the garment sector had been experiencing a shortage of manpower, and job fairs would enable the jobless youth to get employment.
More than 15 companies participated in the fair.
Inaugurating the fair, Minister for Medium and Large Industries Katta Subramanya Naidu said the garment industry had around 50,000 vacancies. The employee strength in the sector was now over four lakh.
