| Actor Vijayakant's Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam opened its account in the Chennai Corporation Council, even as the DMK-led alliance won all but eight of the 67 wards in the byelection held on Sunday.
The DMDK captured five wards, all in north Chennai, while the BJP bagged two and the CPI (M) one.
The final tally: DMK 32; Congress 16; PMK 9; DPI 2; DMDK 5; BJP 2 and CPI (M) 1.
As the results came, fireworks were burst and candidates showered with garlands of roses. Tension prevailed in some counting centres when election agents of different parties disagreed with the results. Congress members had a tiff with BJP members at the Pachaiappa's College counting centre when a BJP candidate won in ward 73 (Aminjikarai East). Supporters of an Independent candidate in ward 40 (in Pulianthope zone) staged a road roko near Ambedkar College for about two hours claiming that the counting was fudged to favour the DMK candidate. Members of the DMK-led alliance comprise 94 per cent of the Corporation Council, which has 155 councillors.
The indirect election to the post of Mayor will be held on March 1 at the Chennai Corporation.
