Rise in hoax calls
There's been a marked increase in the number of hoax calls being made to Railway authorities and officials are grappling a faceless nameless enemy.
 INDIA , 21-February-2007  1:45:22 AM
Gujarat has been fortunate not to witness any incident like the Samjhauta Express blast but there has been a sudden rise in hoax calls for bombs in trains these days.

The Karnavati Express from Ahmedabad to Mumbai was stopped at Surat in the morning and thoroughly checked after a caller warned of a bomb on the train.

It turned out to be a hoax.

On Sunday night, the August Kranti Express from Mumbai to Delhi was stopped at Surat and searched after a similar call. The train was delayed by over an hour.

"The check-in process should be as stringent as in airports then we would know that the calls are not genuine," said a passenger.

Faceless enemy

There's been a marked increase in the number of hoax calls being made to Railway authorities and officials are grappling a faceless nameless enemy.

But security on trains is a problem that even Union Railway Minister Lalu Yadav admits is tough to solve.

Since the February 19, 2006 blast at the Ahmedabad railway station, police and railway authorities are taking all threat calls very seriously.

A CCTV is installed at the Ahmedabad station and sniffer dogs deployed. But officials admit hoax calls are a nuisance.

"I request the public not to make any such hoax calls as sometimes the security officials may feel that they are routine calls and may lead to lack of security at that point," said Arvind Khare, DRM, Ahmedabad Division.

Though passengers may be upset by delays thanks to hoax calls, it's still better to be late than be witness to a tragedy like on the Delhi-Atari Express.
